Things that annoy me

1. Only accepting job applicants, not rejecting them: I know some places do actually tell you if you “aren’t successful” with an application, but its annoying when you have an interview and they say they’ll get back to you and don’t.

2. Assuming you remember every job you’ve applied for: I had an interview this morning for a position that I don’t even remember applying for…. yet when I was called by the recruitment agency they acted like I’d been waiting by the phone for their call.

3. Not telling me who I’ll be working for in the ad: This is usually only an issue when a recruitment agency is in charge, and they place some generic ad about the job. I’d be annoyed if I went through a whole process only to find out it was a company I had a moral issue working for.

4. Not telling me what the job actually is: This is more a subset of number 3, where the generic recruitmentspeak is so vague that the actual job description could really mean anything.

5. Business Attire: I find the whole idea of wearing any kind of uncomfortable clothes to be insane, but especially if the job doesn’t involve being seen. Someone in a call centre should be able to wear nothing but a bathrobe unless a videophone is being used.

6. Job websites: Each of the major websites has some issue that annoys me – whether it is being unable to sort results by date (because I don’t want to look at the jobs I’ve already seen), or not being able to search by sub-catagories in an industry (because I’m not looking for a regional manager job, just entry level stuff).

7-10. Goals, Dreams, Plans and Visions: Yes, I have no lifegoals, or big dreams, no visions of the future and no 5 year plan. Even if I did, all knowing this can do is weigh the odds against me. Saying – “I want to take your job”, or “I plan to quit after a year to do X” is not going to help me get a job. Even saying I want kids would affect my potential future availability and make the person who has no kid plans get the job.
