Oh yeah! New, fast* DSL.

Of course, I’ll only be using such speeds to download open source software (Ubuntu 6.10 is coming down at the moment) ;-)

* its only fast compared to other connections that are available in this third world country, I’m sure in Europe you can get these speeds with a bit of string between 2 cans, but 1.5mbit/s seems fast compared to the old 256k, or my original 28.8 modem.

Your answers suggest you are a Peacemaker

Uncategorized — frozensummers on October 28, 2006 at 7:33 pm

The four aspects that make up this personality type are:

Spontaneous, Facts, Hearts and Introvert

Summary of Peacemakers

  • Value personal freedom
  • Particularly sensitive to the feelings of others
  • Think of themselves as steady, gentle and sympathetic
  • Others may mistake their quiet nature for weakness

More about Peacemakers

Peacemakers focus on the present and enjoy helping others in practical ways. They are sensitive to the world around them and take quiet joy from people and nature, particularly animals. Peacemakers value close relationships, but it may take time for others to get to know them.

Peacemakers are the most likely group to say they dislike reading history books, according to a UK survey.

Peacemakers live by a set of personal values, which they work hard to reflect in their everyday life. They would rather support an activity than organise it. When they do find themselves in leadership positions, they observe quietly and lead by example.

In situations where they can’t use their talents or are unappreciated, Peacemakers may withdraw and become self-critical. Under extreme stress, Peacemakers may become even more critical of themselves and others and make harsh judgements about minor issues.

Peacemakers tend to show someone how much they care about them by helping them in a practical way rather than putting their feelings into words.

Peacemaker Careers

Peacemakers are often drawn to jobs that allow them to serve others and require close attention to detail.

It’s important to remember that no survey can predict personality type with 100 percent accuracy. Experts say that we should use personality type to better understand ourselves and others, but shouldn’t feel restricted by our results.

My bike is back + free stuff

Uncategorized — frozensummers on October 25, 2006 at 6:38 am

Well…. I had a very interesting day.

First, I caught the train down to get my bike (from SCM lane cove). And did so. It was raining a little when I rode off, but otherwise it was great to be back on the bike. It was also nice and shiny thanks to being washed and having lashing of new chrome.

Free thing #1 – pink slip – because when your paying 1000 worth of insurance, such a small thing doesn’t matter to them

So, I rode home to the coast…. in the only way one can after having not ridden in over 8 weeks (note the time length, it’ll be important later), via the old road. Awesome ride, the new bars – while technically identical to the old ones, just seemed to be positioned better or something. Sweeping down the hill to brooklyn I was in the groove…. steering with my arse and everything.

Then, my battery decided that sitting around doing nothing waiting for parts from Japan for over 8 weeks wasn’t something it enjoyed…. and so I endured 30ish kmh as my bike surged and spluttered its way from brooklyn to road warriors. I just made it. Then the helpful locals did their thing…. we pulled the battery out, hooked it up to the charger and then I sat around and drank a latte (quite nice actually, better than uni coffee – although I’ve constantly heard that it was bad, but it was my first there)

After an hour or so, through the battery back in, rode home while doing my best not to brake or indicate. Got home. Hooked battery to my charger at home.

Then, my mum says “you got a package”…. I was slightly surprised, and opened it up to reveal my new trendy Draggin combat pants (in red, because their faster), and some chinos, and some of that knee armour….

Free thing #2 – 2 sets of knee armour…. the Velcro seems useless, but I’m sure I could work out a way to strap them on like my old soccer shin pads.

Even better (and this is why I was surprised) was that I ordered them (direct from the draggin jeans website) only yesterday – and they said 2-4 days, and I’m in the sticks…. it usually takes longer than they said.

So my bike is back, I have new pants, and I’ve finally stopped at road warriors…. I think it counts as a good day overall.

Firefox 2 is out

Yay! They’ve released it, and it hasn’t changed much….

Things I like….

  • Telling me which search engine the search bar is using in text form as well as the icon – good for all the forms of google.
  • In-line spell check for forms and this blog (although it doesn’t have the word blog in the dictionary)

I’m going to be sore tomorrow

I found the important parts of my weights set this morning (the bars for the dumbbells), so I put them and the actual weights (which were in my room) together and did a good set while watching the ultimate motivation – the Dilbert cartoon series. I also discovered that my motorcycle gloves work well at protecting my palms and bracing my wrists…. Soon, I shall regain my awesome physique…. Muhahahahaha!!!!!!!11!one

Have a bright and bubbly personality

Uncategorized — frozensummers on October 22, 2006 at 6:42 am

That was an actual job requirement I just read on seek.com.au. I see a bunch of job ads everyday that say something like this, or unsubtly imply it. Why can’t I find any fucking jobs that say “Have a dark and depressed personality” or “Not be a vapid blonde bimbo”

I’m thinking that typing “making ice” into google might get me into a lucrative career if the recent media hype is to be believed.

The Moon, she hangs like a cruel portrait
Soft winds whisper the bidding of trees
As this tragedy starts with a shattered glass heart
And the Midnightmare trampling of dreams
But oh, no tears please
Fear and pain may accompany Death
But it is desire that shepherds it’s certainty
As We shall see…

I like my metal with keyboards

IE7 is out

Uncategorized — frozensummers on October 19, 2006 at 3:57 am

Yes, I installed it. It’s different, and while some of it seems cool (like quick tabs, and cleartype), they seem to have changed some things for the sake of change, like the location of the stop and refresh buttons at the top. Since they’ve been in the same spot (more or less) since the original Mozilla…. I don’t like it. It’d be like switching around the pedals in a car because its more efficient….

The Coffee Filter

Uncategorized — frozensummers on October 18, 2006 at 4:39 am

(NB: No coffee was harmed in the making of this blog)

So, another day, another post interview job rejection. [sarcasm]Yay![/sarcasm] I think the problem is HR people and general management types who are trying to justify their existence by getting my hopes up.

It works like this, say there are 5 positions to be filled. If those doing the hiring only called in 5 people for interviews and hired them all, their jobs would be under threat, as it could be percieved that they aren’t doing anything – and the whole interviewing process could be skipped.

So, what they do is call in 20 people for a group interview, whittle it down to 10 people to do a one-on-one interview, and then hire 5 people. Now if these HR people are even semi competent, then from reading the resumes they already have a pretty good idea who they’ll hire…. and that means that I’m just filler – someone being interviewed to make up the numbers. I’m just the beans that get filtered so that the coffee filter has reason to exist…. even when you could just eat the coffee beans…. and now, a quote to end.

“Not so fast. I like to savour the moment before I crush your misplaced optimism.” – Catbert (The Evil Director of Human Resources) (NB: No one has ever accused me of misplaced optimism – just the opposite, I just wanted to quote catbert, and this was the best I could find on the interweb)

I really tried to like it

Uncategorized — frozensummers on October 14, 2006 at 2:49 am

I really did, but it sucks. It is possible the worst of its kind ever…. and I’ve used a lot. Even the old one worked better.

What? You may ask…. Windows Live Mail. It looks bad, it is slow, and the worst thing is that you can’t perform an action on multiple emails simultaneously…. which makes clearing out spam (which is all my hotmail really gets) almost impossible.

Yes, you can drag and drop, and it uses the latest trendy scripting, but if I can’t do something I did everyday in the old interface then it is a disappointment.

But I am upgrading to faster internet at home….
