The Myth of the Happy Cows

Blog — frozensummers on July 27, 2009 at 1:53 pm

colourfull_cows_by_coele_koeLets just start with the big idea: Everyone going vegetarian means we get to make the cows extinct.

The false dichotomy that is set up by many vegetarian activist types is between terrified animals living torturous lives in cramped conditions waiting to be slaughtered, and happy animals living perfect, fulfilled lives roaming the plains. It is actually much more complicated than that. There are many shades of grey, and the “good” option they argue for is not based in reality.

The animals that provide our food sources have been so domesticated that they could not live in the wild. They are not used to searching for food, avoiding predators, or even dealing with the usual conditions of the world. Not to mention the untold damage to nature that would be done by huge herds of cows trying to survive, especially in Australia. They would trample wildlife, injure themselves navigating the natural environment, eat all the food that local species require and probably all starve to death, or die from injuries and disease, or be killed by predators, or hit by traffic.

The end result would be cows most likely being extinct. The same is likely with all other domesticated species who no longer have an extant wild ancestor. Sure, some species may survive in pockets, or adapt to certain conditions. This has been shown with escaped horses, cats and dogs, but those cases usually involve singular animals. Whether similar outcomes would occur in a mass release is highly debatable.

Sure, the “bad” case presented is not an ideal situation. We should try to keep animals in good conditions, if only because the meat tastes better. The fact is that in Australia our farming is mostly done in ethical ways…. Chickens are the only real exception. The giant cramped cattle feed lots you see in docos don’t exist in oz. BUT, if the choice we have is between animals suffering and humans starving to death then the ethics are not as clear cut as PETA would like us to believe.

Podcasts I Like #2: This Week in Tech

Get It Here

Ah, the first podcast I listened to. From the very first episode back in 2005, when it was called “Revenge of the Screen Savers”, it has been an entertaining look at exactly what the title describes.

Mostly anyway. It has a habit of getting off track…. way off track at times, but that is part of the charm and entertainment value.

If you haven’t ever listened to it, you should.

Insert dvorak.org/blog in-joke here.

ChaotiMusic 104 – Bad Crowd

Music — frozensummers on July 21, 2009 at 10:42 am

That logoI’ve been doing this for 2 years. A new song, every week.

This song is about my past. It speaks for itself.

Go and listen to it here

Lyrics:

Verse 1:
They found me
In a dark place
All alone
They promised
Escape from
The Unknown

Verse 2:
I embraced
The new life
I was sold
I took faith
Because I
Was consoled
I thought I’d
Found my
Vocation
I would preach
The way to
Salvation

Chorus:
Bad crowd
Join the bad crowd
Bad crowd
Falsehood enshroud

Bridge:
Could not procure
The funding for
Keeping my place
To fight the war
Thrown to the wolves
Like a worn out whore
Left with the doubts
I can no more ignore

Final Chorus:

Bad crowd
Fuck the bad crowd

My canon is bigger than yours

LOLcat_bible_by_LunaticKiocan⋅on  /ˈkænən/ [kan-uhn]
6. the books of the Bible recognized by any Christian church as genuine and inspired.

Now, if I was to ask any Christian on the street “what is the canon?” I’d probably get a blank stare, or them asking if I meant the printer/camera company. If I was lucky and happened to run into someone who has just left Moore College I might get a nice long list of 66 books.

Which is nice, but its a little small. It also not something defined in the Anglican Thirty-Nine Articles, as that only lists the Old Testament books. The Lutherans also have some issues, as none of their confessions define the New Testament. Mainly due to some issues that Luther had with some of the books. Other protestants (or at least the Reformed) have the 66 defined by their confessions (starting in 1557 with the Gallic Confession and then in the 1561 Belgic Confession and so on).

If I talked to Pope Babyeater XVI he’d give a larger list, with an extra 8 (plus some extra bits for a few others). This of course was only decided on by the Council of Trent in 1546. Kinda late in the whole history of things.

The Patriarch of the Orthodox Church would give me another slightly longer list with 6 more on top of the Catholic list. Once again this was settled late, in 1672, by the Synod of Jerusalem.

Of course we could delve deep into the history of the various orthodox churches, the Syriac Peshitta only has 22 books in its New Testament because 2 Peter, 2 John, 3 John, Jude and Revelation are missing. This is on top of having those extras from the Catholic and Modern Orthodox lists. At least usually. It depends on which manuscript you look at.

The Armenians have had many extra New Testament books, a Third Epistle to the Corinthians, Advice of the Mother of God to the Apostles, the Books of Criapos, the Epistle of Barnabas. As well as the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs in the OT.

We can then take a trip to Africa…. The Coptics include the Epistles of Clement. Of course, the Ethiopians win the size contest with 81 books. Including such gems as the Book of Enoch, Book of Jubilees and the 3 Books of Meqabyan.

From here we could get into the modern critical analysis, but that doesn’t leave much left. So, instead lets go back to the first ever defined christian canon.

That would be by Marcion who got himself all excommunicated because he believed that Yahweh was a lesser demiurge and that Jesus and his God were true. His canon is the smallest because he rejected the whole Old Testament, and most of the New Testament, keeping only an edited version of Luke’s Gospel and 10 of Paul’s letters.

So…. next time you hear some call the Bible the word of God. Ask them which Bible….

ChaotiMusic 103 – What’s The Harm?

Music — frozensummers on July 15, 2009 at 10:19 am

whatstheharmstaticwhite.gifThis song is about the dangers that arise when you don’t think critically.

The verse lyrics are all ripped from the website what’s the harm? They are all true stories. They are all properly documented. The topics covered are ghosts, repressed memory therapy, UFOs, numerology, chiropractic, ear candling, acupuncture and religious fundamentalism.

The music side of things is very blues inspired for the chorus, with a good dose of progressive rock for the rest….

Get it here

Lyrics:

Verse 1:
Shot, in the head
Looking for a ghost
Put, in prison
By recovered memories
Mass suicide
To reach the aliens.
Watch, a number
Destroy your economy

Chorus:

What’s the harm in? (x3)
Believing
What’s the harm in? (x3)
Believing bullshit
What’s the harm in? (x3)
Delusions
What’s the harm in? (x3)
Believing bullshit!

Verse 2:
Killed, by a stroke
From manipulated neck
Burns, on the face
From an ear candle
Die, from needles
That can’t cure disease
Crash, a jumbo
Into skyscrapers

A Brief History of Dan #1: In the Beginning….

A Brief History of Dan, Blog — frozensummers on July 15, 2009 at 5:14 am

old_fromcruise_mettshirt….a bunch of irrelevant stuff happened.

Then, I was born, 26 years ago last Saturday.

Not much happened for a while, at least not much that wasn’t purged with my underage record. The only real interesting points would be that sometime during high school I got it into my head that I was great with computers.

More specifically, despite showing talents in many other areas (including art, design, science and pretending to work while playing quake) I chose Computer Science as the future path I was going take.

I was also a Scout. This contributes to me being able to start fires in almost any situation, as well as being good with ropes…. a skill that can be useful in ways that I could never conceive of while in scouts ;-)

It also allowed me to be exposed to the “rock music”. The key event in this was the Australian Jamboree I went on (the 18th in Springfield, Queensland) where my group spent 10 days listening to Metallica….. we may have participated in some of the interesting events, like beta testing the new vending machines by hacking them for free cans and “observing” the Girl Scouts.

After this I purchased my first heavy metal album, ReLoad.

As for my religious views, I was what I’d call a apatheist. I didn’t really care about it, hadn’t been raised in anything specific, and hadn’t really thought about it.

The other possibly relevant fact, I was fat, and always had been.

These various and sundry facts give you a kind of primer of where I was at when I started uni, which is where the plot thickens (while I do the opposite).

ChaotiMusic 102 – Trust Your Technolust

Music — frozensummers on July 7, 2009 at 9:35 pm

hak5 shirtA totally heavy, but nerdy tune, with the title/chorus being a phrase I “borrowed” from the guys (and girls) of Hak5. The rest of the lyrics are all derived from the kind of topics, ideas and such that you might see on their show. Points if you understand all the references. Bonus points if you actually know how to use such techniques….

The music is totally detuned. I took my Tele’o'doom and tuned it all the way down to Drop-A, which is usually a tuning you’d do on a 7-stringer. For instance it is the typical tuning a Korn song will use. It really gets that sludgy strings flapping against the neck tone happening…. And yes, the intro quote is Jason Newsted (from the S&M doco, when he’s talking about the song Minus Human).

Lyrics:

Verse 1:
Escape from the analog
Compile your own direction
Break it all down to packets
Send it through the connection
Wrap it in the protocol
Crypto to duck detection
Don’t let the crash override
Your new gadget affection

Chorus:
Trust your technolust
Trust your techno…. Technolust

Verse 2:
Write it down in binary
Avoid packet inspection
Open the source of data
Digital tubes of perfection
Sweeten with some pineapple
Virtual essence injection
Brute force tables for rainbow
Hackers live insurrection

Podcasts I Like #1: Twilight And Thebes Show

Blog, Podcasts I Like — frozensummers on July 7, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Get it hereTwilight and Thebes

How to describe the show? A husband and wife, the wife being a fetish phone sex operator talk about their lives, political news, share music and generally ramble.

But, these are the kind of weird types who live off-the-grid in New Mexico, support gun rights and are generally skeptical of “the man”. They aren’t the most regular of podcasters, but the episodes are always entertaining. It is also a good source of news that isn’t always covered by the mainstream media.

They’ve also played my music on one of their episodes. Which is always a plus in my book.
